Case Study: Daniel

Background

Daniel was a talented, highly creative chef whose life had begun to unravel beneath the surface. Once thriving in a busy kitchen and front-of-house environment, he had withdrawn into a back-room role after anxiety, fear, and health concerns began to dominate his days.

When Daniel first came to me, he presented with a number of health issues including GERD, the early signs of COPD, and IBS. Despite reassurance from several doctors, he was convinced he had stomach cancer. His medical anxiety was consuming him, and every new symptom felt catastrophic.

We explored his history and discovered a long-standing dependency on cannabis, beginning at age 15. Over the years, it had expanded to include alcohol and later, Class-A drugs. Through sheer determination, Daniel had freed himself from alcohol and harder substances, but cannabis remained his coping mechanism- a way to sleep, to think, to calm his nerves.

With his COPD worsening, he could no longer smoke, resorting instead to cannabis edibles and teas. His personal and professional life suffered: he couldn’t drive, avoided family gatherings, and was becoming increasingly isolated. He wanted change, but more importantly, he wanted peace.

Approach

Daniel’s strong imagination, the same quality that made him an incredible chef also fuelled his health anxiety. Through hypnotherapy and deep exploratory questioning over four sessions, we traced his fears back to a specific childhood trauma involving a parent.

By using regression techniques, we were able to safely revisit that event, reframe it through adult perspective, and introduce self-compassion practices that helped Daniel separate his past from his present reality. Together, we worked on self-love and grounding techniques to reduce anxiety and rebuild emotional safety.

Outcome

Today, Daniel has been completely clean for over 14 months. He has returned to the job he loves, confidently leading front-of-house again. He’s back driving, spending quality time with his family, and engaging in life fully. His transformation is not just about being free from substances, it’s been about rediscovering the joy and connection that addiction had taken from him.
