Case Study: Helen

Background

Helen came to me during what should have been one of the most peaceful times of her life: retirement. After a long and successful career as a headmistress, she was finally free from the pressures of work, but instead of relaxation, she found herself paralysed by anxiety.

As we began working together, it became clear that Helen’s entire career had been driven by a powerful need to rescue others. She had dedicated her life to transforming schools in deprived areas, creating safety and opportunity for children who had little of either. It was noble work, but beneath it all, it was also personal.

Growing up, Helen had been neglected, often left wondering where her next meal would come from, and deeply starved of love and attention. In adulthood, her “rescuer” personality allowed her to channel that pain into purpose, but when the work ended, she was left with herself, and old wounds began to resurface.

Approach

Through hypnotherapy and cognitive-behavioural therapy, we explored the beliefs that had shaped Helen’s life and identity. Together, we worked on helping her reconnect to joy and give herself permission to focus on her own needs- something she had never learned to do.

We also revisited passions she had long abandoned: sailing, singing, and creative hobbies that once made her feel alive. Using a combination of regression therapy and reframing, Helen learned to view self-care not as indulgence, but as healing.

Outcome

Over the following months, Helen’s anxiety significantly reduced. She made the bold decision to move closer to her daughter, embracing her new role as a grandmother- something that brought her genuine happiness and belonging. She now lives a balanced life, doing the things she loves, and finally experiences the peace she spent decades creating for others.
