Changing my thinking created a new reality: Healing from within with chronic illness

A person stands with arms outstretched, facing the sunrise over a misty landscape. The sun shines brightly, creating a dramatic silhouette and warm golden light across the scene.

Introduction: When Thinking Shapes Everything

When you receive a diagnosis of a chronic, incurable health condition, it’s easy to feel like your life is ruled by limitations. That was my reality for a long time until I changed the way I thought.

You may be thinking this does not apply to me, I’m stressed but I do not have a diagnosis. I would emphasise YET!

I am not talking about toxic positivity or pretending everything is okay when it is not. I mean really looking inwards, confronting my strongly held beliefs, facing my story, and making a conscious decision to change the meaning I gave to what was happening to me.

This blog is about the power of that shift. How changing my thinking created a new reality, not just emotionally but physically. How mindset became my medicine. And why I believe it can be yours too.

The Wake-Up Call: Beliefs Create Behaviours

At first, I didn’t realise my thinking was running the show.

I thought I was just dealing with the condition, the symptoms, the appointments, the exhaustion. But underneath all that was a deeper issue, my beliefs about myself, my body, and what was possible.

I believed I was broken. That I would never have control over my life again. That my worth was tied to what I could physically do.

Looking back, it is no surprise that my choices reflected that avoiding help,   pushing through pain, staying silent when I needed support.

Beliefs drive behaviour, and my beliefs were shaped by years of conditioning, pain, and a misunderstanding of my own capacity.

The Shift- Facing My Beliefs Honestly

The real turning point came when I started questioning where these beliefs came from.

Who told me I was weak for slowing down?

Where did I learn that asking for help meant failure?

Why did I feel guilt for taking care of myself?

Some of those answers went back decades. Childhood. School. Work culture. Society’s obsession with productivity.

I began to see that many of the beliefs holding me back weren’t even mine. They were inherited, absorbed, and rehearsed.

And that is when everything changed.

Because once you see the belief, you can challenge it.

Reframing the Narrative, I Am Not My Condition

Instead of seeing my diagnosis as a life sentence, I began seeing it as an opportunity to change, to slow down, to listen inward, and to rebuild from the inside out.

I stopped trying to “fight” my condition and started working with my body, not against it.

I started asking better questions.

“What does my body need today?”

“What thought is fuelling this feeling?”

“Is this belief still serving me?”

And slowly, I found more energy. More clarity. More freedom.

I was not “healed” in the traditional sense. However, something powerful had shifted. I no longer felt powerless. I felt in charge.

Healing from Within: Why Mindset is Medicine

Here is what I have learnt.

Your nervous system listens to your thoughts. Chronic stress is not just emotional, it shows up physically. When I believed I was stuck, my body stayed stuck too.

Self-compassion rewires your brain. I stopped berating myself for what I could not do, and started celebrating what I could. That shift alone lifted years of weight.

Belief change creates new choices. When you believe change is possible, you start making choices that align with that  from nutrition and movement to boundaries and rest.

Healing doesn’t mean being cured. It means reconnecting with your own power to create peace, purpose, and presence, even when life is uncertain.

The #BVOMT Philosophy: My Daily Practice

This whole journey led me to create the #BVOMT approach,  Best Version Of Myself Today.

It is not about perfection. It is not about hustle. It is about showing up each day with a mindset rooted in honesty, hope, and action.

It is about recognising that.

B = Beliefs — What we believe about ourselves is the blueprint for everything else.

V = Values/Version — Who are you becoming? Do your actions match that version?

O = Opportunity — Every moment is a chance to choose differently.

M = Motivation — Purpose-driven, not pressure-driven.

T = Time — Real change happens over time, not overnight.

This is not just a philosophy. It is a way of living. A lens to see your life through  especially when it feels like everything is out of your control. You will come to truly understand you have complete control over how you react to things outside of yourself.

Why This Matters for People with Chronic Illness

If you live with a chronic condition, you already know how hard it is to feel seen.

There is the physical fatigue, yes. But there is also the emotional exhaustion trying to explain yourself, hold it all together, and not lose your identity in the process.

What I want you to know is this.

You are not broken!
You are not weak!
You do not need to be “fixed”.

But you do need to believe in your capacity to heal from within and that starts by shifting your thinking.

Final Thoughts- It Is Now Your Turn

This is not  just my story. It is a path that is available to all of us!

You do not have to hit rock bottom to begin.

You definitely do not have to settle for surviving.

You can reclaim your narrative. You can question those old beliefs. You can start today, not with a big dramatic change, but with a small conscious choice.

A choice to listen, inwardly.

A choice to challenge a strongly held belief that is holding you back.

A choice to be kind to yourself even when it gets tough.

This is how we change  not all at once, but one belief, one thought, one moment at a time.

Ready to Start?

I am sure you can see that quick fixes are not the answer. You are now ready for a sustainable, empowering approach to change…
